Across North Dakota

Day 6 Across North Dakota

Starting out much earlier than we have ever started, just after 6.  The morning was beautiful with a nice wind from the east.  This really makes a difference when you drive a “sail” down the road.  The first few hours were through some of the flattest ground I’ve ever seen.  There were no hills or even overpasses to break the horizon. Slowly the ground began to roll.

We have notice that most all of the farms up here are just starting their planting.  A lot of the soil hasn’t even had it’s tilling.  As we approached Bismarck, ND we noticed the humongous oil wells pumping.  There weren’t a lot of wells but I am sure the size really pumped the volume.

My guess is that these were at least 5 times larger than the ones in the South.

Just before we got to Medora, we came upon the Painted Canyon of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Even though there was a cold, windy rain falling this wasn’t going to be missed.  It reminded us of the Painted Desert of AZ.  The raining did not help us in seeing the beautiful canyon colors.  However, I was really glad we didn’t miss it.  The first that we had heard of this was a sign about 3 miles before we arrived.  Another shock for us was that we crossed into the Mountain time zone.  I wasn’t expecting to see this until tomorrow as we cross into Montana.  That made our early start a waste of time.

Here in Medora there is a windy, cold and wet 48 degrees.  Hoping that tomorrow we will have a dry day with the wind behind us again, as we drive to Livingston, MT.  We spent a few days in Livingston back in 2010 on our trip to Glacier, Yellowstone and Tetons.
