Mt. Shasta area tour
June 25, 2022
Jan wanted me to tell of the
STUPID thing I did last night when we went out to supper. After carefully parking in a shady parking
spot, I decided to switch keys for a smaller key to carry. Reaching into the car’s console, I dropped
the key for the swap. I grabbed, without
looking, the other “key “and locked the car.
The key that I grabbed wasn’t a key at all, it was a flosser! Just as I locked the door I realized this. But TOO LATE.
We were locked out! There was a
man in a car next to us that I asked if he were local and if he knew of a locksmith. This fellow was a great help. He took his phone and called for a
locksmith. It took about 20 minutes for
the fellow to get to us and open the door.
During the waiting time the fellow next door talked to us about how he
had come from China to India and then to the US with $200 in his pocket. He worked hard and now owned over 80 homes in
Weed and several businesses. He was
fascinating to listen to. He also owned
the restaurant where we were about to eat! NO PICTURES available.
Getting an early start the next morning, we drove to an area where three water falls were. We had heard that there was another falls further down the road that Teddy Roosevelt had visited and declared the 8th wonder of the world. Making a last-minute decision we went to it first. The falls name is Burney Falls.
As has been our norm we arrived before the entrance booth was open. We tried to find where we could pay the entrance fee but no one was on duty. The falls was a mere 75’ from the visitors parking lot. When we saw it we were amazed at its uniqueness and beauty. I don’t know that I would put it as the 8th wonder of the world but it topped everything we have seen on this trip. There was a loop trail that gave different views and was really nice hiking.
From Burney Falls we drove back to the 3 falls that we had originally planned on going to.
They were nice but we were really glad that we had gone to Burney. Back into Mt. Shasta we drove over to Shasta Lake.
Really a pretty lake and looked so cool on a day as hot as we were experiencing (91 degrees). This is the hottest weather we have experienced. There was one other trail that we wanted see and it is on Mt. Shasta. It was about 12 miles up Mt. Shasta. There were some great views as we drove up.
Then arriving at the trailhead we found a full parking lot with great views of Mt. Shasta. Being this close to that mountain was certainly overwhelming. This parking lot was the starting point for several trails and particularly those that want go to the top of the 14,000’ mountain. Note that the trees are shaped like Christmas trees naturally,
