Scenic Ride Around

June 23, 2022

In visiting with folks from the local area, we were told that there was beautiful scenic drive of about 50 miles.  We filled with fuel and off we went.  Our first sight was lava fields.

There were miles of this.  Looking at it, I would have sworn that it was man piled.  However, we learn that this was natures work.  There were a few lakes with views of the different snow-capped mountains.

The first 30 miles had nearly no one else of the road.  It was a little unnerving without traffic and being this isolated.  Several of the lakes were really shallow.  One lake mentioned that its deepest point was 9’.

Continuing on we came upon a ski area at Mt. Bachelor.  The parking lot was really crowded and we noticed lots of bike racks on the cars.  I can’t confirm this but, we think the ski runs were being used by mountain bikes.  We didn’t have the time to hang around to see.  As we left this location, we came upon another ski area, this one was still having skiers on the slopes.  Driving down the mountain to Bend we met many bikers riding up the highway, UP is the operable work.  Bend, Oregon with all it’s trendy little restaurants looks like a small Boulder, CO.

In talking with other RVers, I am finding that they are on the road now, even with fuel prices being so high and inflation hitting hard, because they don’t feel any of this is going to get better very soon.  In fact, they expect cost to get much higher before they turn around.  Most of the campgrounds we have been to have about 90% occupancy.  Of the RVs in the campgrounds, it appears that 70-75% are travel trailers and 5th wheelers, the remainder are motor homes.  The motor homes break down appears to be 50% class A, 45% class C and the other 5% is class B.
